The Chase is the Thrill
One of the Local QRPers came by last week, troubled in spirit and shaken in his beliefs. "It was one of
those meetings I went to recently, he explained. "There was this deep draft, esoteric type there who did
not look too kindly on the DXCC. Why, he even said: 'Man does not live by endorsement stickers alone.'
What do you think of that?" Son of a Gun! We hardly knew what to say in these times when heresy is
rampant and the solid, old values are being eroded. For we have noticed the portents in the skies and
the land is sere. But we thought at length, what could we say?
For there may be things in our own personal worlds these days which may not be necessary for the
body but are essential to nurture the delicate spirits of DXers. For we thought of the DXers all over the
world who are united by the spirit and the tokens of accomplishment on which their own values have
been placed. "Perhaps you may need a new Shaman", we advised the QRPer. "One better able to
divine the hidden, one better able to control events." For many DXers already know that the chase is the
thrill and the stickers the record. And the values are what we DXers place on those things that are of
interest perhaps only to us. And it must be said again: "Only a DXer can understand another DXer. Only
a DXer can understand DX." And watch for the false Shamans . . . Many may claim, but few do
understand. Only we true-blue types do . . .
A man should keep his friendship in constant repair (Samuel Johnson (1755).
